Please be cautious and do not exceed the maximum temperature, pressure, and pressure differential ratings listed in the relevant table. To select the right gasket material, refer to the material compatibility chart provided.
Here are some application-specific guidelines for using sintered disc filters (note that the shiny side has larger-diameter pores):
- For oleoresin filtration, position the shiny side up, facing the direction of oleoresin flow.
- For adsorptive scrubbing with materials like T41 Activated Bleaching Clay (10% activated carbon), place the shiny side down, facing opposite the flow direction.
- Optionally, add a paper filter above the first filter to prevent clogging caused by trapped filtration media.
- When using multiple sintered disc filters, stack them in decreasing size order (e.g., 5 μm filter followed by a 1 μm filter).
- For in-line material filtration, choose various sizes as needed (e.g., 25 μm or 10 μm) and position the shiny side towards the flow direction.

Cleaning Procedure
The frequency of cleaning sintered disc filters can vary, but a good rule of thumb is to clean the filter if solvent does not flow at 15 psig (~2 atm.) due to clogging. Follow the cleaning procedure outlined below and perform preventative maintenance before clogging occurs. To prevent excessive clogging, place larger micron-sized filters above the sintered tri-clamp filter to catch bigger particles.
For optimal performance, clean the sintered disc filter after each use. Not following the recommended cleaning procedure may void the warranty.
Recommended Cleaning Procedure:
- Stop the operation of the relevant instrument.
- Equalize pressure on both sides of the filter with atmospheric pressure by gently changing pressure (<0.1 psi/second) through controlled venting or introducing dry N2 gas.
- Remove the filter.
- Gently remove filter debris using a nylon or soft metal brush (e.g., brass).
- Ultrasonicate the filter in a 304- and 316-stainless steel compatible laboratory metals detergent like Alconox, following the manufacturer's recommended procedure (time, concentration, etc.).
- Blow the filter out in the opposite direction of media flow using clean compressed air or N2 gas nozzle.
- Repeat steps 4-6 as necessary.
Alternative Procedure without Bath Ultrasonicator:
- Stop the operation of the relevant instrument.
- Equalize pressure on both sides of the filter with atmospheric pressure by gently changing pressure (<0.1 psi/second) through controlled venting or introducing dry N2 gas.
- Remove the filter.
- Soak the filter in a 304- and 316-stainless steel compatible laboratory metals detergent like Alconox for 5 minutes, following the manufacturer's recommended procedure.
- Gently remove filter debris using a nylon or soft metal brush (e.g., brass).
- Blow the filter out in the opposite direction of oleoresin/filtration media flow using clean compressed air or N2 gas nozzle.
- Repeat steps 4-6 as necessary.
Notes:
- Isopropyl alcohol and/or deionized water can be used for light cleaning instead of detergents like Alconox.
- N.B.Oler does not recommend cleaning filters through back-flowing, as solvent/gas will take the path of least resistance and not properly clean the filter.
